“The association between erectile dysfunction and hypertension is probably causal, and the association is probably more likely when erectile dysfunction is a result of underlying cardiovascular conditions rather than secondary causes,” he said.
Nissen noted that although some erectile dysfunction drugs have a relatively safe effect on blood pressure, the study did not find a significant difference in side effects between the groups.
“This is the first large-scale, controlled trial that compares the safety and effectiveness of sildenafil with that of other classes of medications for erectile dysfunction, such as nitrates and alpha-blockers,” he added.
Sildenafil and tadalafil are the first drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat erectile dysfunction. However, they are not approved by the FDA for this use.

In the study, the researchers also compared the risk of hypertension to the risk of heart disease and found that patients on sildenafil had a significantly higher risk of heart attacks. The risk of these events was similar to that of patients on nitrates.
